APRIL REDSTART In the home of Bird Watching magazine (Peterborough), the gorgeous Redstart is a scarce passage bird, usually seen in tiny numbers in the second half of April (and again in similarly small numbers, in August into September). If you live in the south-east and east of the country, you may think of them in the same way. So, you may be surprised that there are an estimated 135,000 nesting pairs in the UK. Most of the nesting goes on in the west (Redstarts love Wales) and north of the country, though there are pockets of breeding concentration scattered around other areas, associated with heathland habitats and the like.
