Here are a few extra tips to help you identify spring chats ID TIP! Habitat is a good first step in redstart ID. Black Redstarts tend to prefer rocky ‘urban’ terrain, while Redstarts are shy country birds. Chat tails One of the more useful features for the identification of chats is the pattern of the tail. Here are four examples of chat species which have distinctive tails. Males are shown, but females have similar patterns; and all redstarts share similar tail colours.
