Think of Assouline, and the mind springs to oversized, glamorous tomes featuring fabulous people, brands and places, pleasingly arranged on the coffee tables of the jet set. Like many successful businesses, it came from humble beginnings. The first book was published in 1994, by Morocco-born French art director Prosper and Ivory Coast-born former model, Martine, in the basement of their Paris apartment. “It’s time for design to fix real-world problems.” It’s with these words that Harald Gründl, a founding partner of Austrian design studio EOOS, decided to spin off EOOS Next. “We need to rethink the way we build, consume and discard. If we open our eyes, everywhere, there is a dynamic form of counter-culture.” Established in 2020, the social enterprise constantly seeks positive change through design and transformative technologies in the fields of mobility, health, water, self-sufficient toilets, and electricity. “I’m involved in three organisations that deal with three very different aspects of design: that keeps me on my feet”, says Gründl, who studied industrial design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and holds a PhD in philosophy. I pulled onto Stockholm’s orderly streets behind the wheel of a magenta Continental GTC Speed convertible, leaving the upmarket Lärkstaden neighbourhood, where elegant embassies rub shoulders with well-groomed parks. To get a glimpse into the eccentric whirlwind of Evgeny Chichvarkin’s mind, one need only pay a visit to his toilet. The toilet, that is, in his Mayfair wine shop, Hedonism Wines, self-proclaimed ‘best wine and spirits shop in the world’. In his Sine Qua Non Vault, a bizarre kaleidoscope of hundreds of pairs of hands emerges from the wall and ceiling. One looks like it belongs to the Incredible Hulk, another to Mickey Mouse, another is a pair of crimson lobster claws. The green mosaic-tiled ceiling is covered in life-size decorative frogs, their bulging red and yellow eyes gazing down on the unsuspecting visitor.
