When spring is in the air, a cyclist’s mind turns towards the northern classics. Bikes Etc’s Steve Thomas saddles up for a ride around the lush and lumpy Limburg region of the Netherlands, home of the Amstel Gold Race

It’s hard to admit that you got things a little wrong, and even more so to swallow the fact that you completely underestimated and misjudged something or somewhere. But I now bow with embarrassment and openly raise my hand to having done just that with the Limburg region of the Netherlands, about which I was so very wrong. The Netherlands, or Holland as so many of us often refer to it with a minor geographical misjudgment (Holland is a region of The Netherlands), is a place that stands out in a cyclist’s imagination as being a pan-flat country largely reclaimed from the sea. Along with this, we envisage that it has many straight and very windswept roads, all lined with watery dykes, windmills, and highly decorated with tulips and daffodils.…
