SHEFFIELD, PEAK DISTRICT
The Peak District is an area ring-fenced by towns and cities made prosperous by the Industrial Revolution. From Manchester in the west and Halifax in the north to Derby in the south. Yet this National Park has survived almost completely unchanged and remains an oasis of hills and lakes in the heart of England. Sheffield lies to the area’s east. Set in South Yorkshire, it’s a city that’s famous for steel, in particular, stainless steel and crucible steel, which is where its theatre hall (made famous by the snooker) gets its name. With steel-framed bikes on test this month, it seemed like a fitting place to start our ride, and so we headed to the suburb of Ringing low, which sits high to the east of the city. A place…
