THE WAY WE WERE PORTOFINO 150 YEARS AGO Oh, you must picture Portofino a hundred and fifty years ago. No dream boats but xebecs, cap hornier sailing ships, and fishermen’s nets. No wonder boutiques and elite restaurants, but merchants’ fondachi (warehouses), consular offices, stores and bakeries, and taverns in the little square that must have looked like an open-air emporium; mothers and daughters busy at the “Tombolo”, the lace-making table, creating with talent and painstaking patience the marvelous lace sought after all over Europe and even overseas. It was a busy and enterprising world, famous since the old times as a safe harbor for ships plying the Ligurian Sea (“Portus Delphini” was already reported as a military station in Antoninus’ itinerary during Roman times).
