Pirates in Portofino

On an autumn day in the year 1455, a merchant from Mantua returning from Liguria brought dramatic news to Reggio Emilia: a few days earlier, on October 5th, in the bay of Portofino a brig owned by two shipowners from Portovenere was attacked by a band of corsairs. Five people from Reggio Emilia, all young men belonging to some of the most prominent families in the city, were kidnapped. The culprit was Baldassarre di Sori, known as Rampino, a privateer in the service of the Republic of Genoa, who demanded as much as 560 ducats for the release of the captives.
