After 14 years of living in a roughly renovated hall, the owners of this home are finally enjoying a design that does the original building justice.

Originally a scout hall in Melbourne’s Surrey Hills, this home was converted and renovated by peeling back its layers of community history. More than a century old, the weatherboard building has seen everything from ball games to bake sales. But it had also seen better days. “I think some dads probably knocked it together over a weekend,” says Fiona Lynch, the founder of Fiona Lynch Office, who spearheaded the transformation. Her clients had been living in a neighbouring house and loved the street, so when the scout hall went up for sale, they jumped at the chance to buy it. “Afterwards, I’m pretty sure they were thinking, ‘What have we done?’” says Fiona, who began working on the project 14 years after her clients moved in.
