Oasis of Space

Adding an extension and three courtyards has brought another dimension to a heritage property that embraces the light and dark sides of minimalism.

Injecting romance and poetry as well as facility into the business of living is the magic of good design. The owners of this heritage-listed 1863 terrace house in inner Sydney were certainly looking for something special when they asked architect Madeleine Blanchfield to reinvent the property for their lifestyle. Together, owners and architect elucidated the concept for the home as “a bare stage for life’s theatre to fill and empty”. Madeleine describes the owners as “very discerning, bold and decisive”. She says they wanted their home to be an oasis of space and calm in the midst of a much-loved, vibrant neighbourhood.
