Matthew Booth runs his car himself with help from his dad, but that didn’t stop a rookie F1000 title victory

The F1000 Championship is known as a competitive and unforgiving category, especially for newcomers to single-seater racing. Throw into the mix trying to run your own Jedi Mk6/7 car and for most drivers it would be a baptism of fire, with thoughts of a title challenge far from their mind. But Matthew Booth not only survived in 2019, but he thrived, becoming just the second driver in the category’s 22-year history to win the title in his first season. It’s a success few would have believed possible at the start of the year – even with the absence of double and reigning champion Michael Watton – as 2013 champion Lee Morgan returned full-time and perennial race winner Dan Clowes was part of a strong field.
