OUR CAT IS called Hailwood. The receptionist at the vet’s got it immediately, but most people don’t. Not all Autocar readers will have heard of Mike Hailwood, but his name will be familiar to anyone from my generation. His name was on my Corgi Surtees Formula 1 car and my Matchbox F2 car, but Hailwood really entered my conscious when he made his dramatic return to the Isle of Man TT in 1978. Young Goodwin was preparing to fail a bunch of O-levels in the spring of 1978, and the distraction provided by the excitement of ‘Mike The Bike’ sealed the deal.
