BRITAIN BUILT ALMOST a fifth fewer cars in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2021 as car makers continue to suffer what industry lobby group the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders describes as the equivalent of long Covid, referring to the after-effects of the pandemic. The figures did show a small uptick in June, suggesting the semiconductor shortage might be easing slightly, the SMMT said. However, the first-half production of 403,131 cars is 19% down, year on year. The numbers were depressed by a turbulent first half for Jaguar Land Rover, which vies with Nissan for the title of Britain’s largest car manufacturer by volume. JLR last Wednesday posted a loss of over half a billion pounds for the quarter ending in June.…
