I’m not much of a golfer these days, but I am aware of something called LIV Golf, which is currently upsetting the ball-thwacking world. It has arrived in competition to the existing major tours and is backed by Saudi Arabia – sportswashing according to its critics but not so to Greg Norman, the Australian golfing hero who is fronting it. But away from various controversies that threaten to split golf like the Indycar breakaway in the 1990s is a particular triviality that irks me. The location of LIV’s first tournament earlier this year was the Centurion Club, a course variously described in marketing and media as “in Hertfordshire” or “north of London” or “near St Albans”.
