Sunak hints at ICE car ban softening

SPECULATION OVER the possible pushback or “softening” of the UK’s 2030 ban on new ICE car sales has been branded “unhelpful” following remarks by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who suggested the rules could be relaxed. In a briefing last week with reporters, Sunak said environmental measures made in line with the UK government’s net-zero ambitions mustn’t “unfairly impact the public”. He added that decarbonisation efforts must be made “in a proportionate and pragmatic way” that “doesn’t unnecessarily give people more hassle and more costs in their lives”. Sunak’s comments sparked widespread speculation that the ban on the sale of new purecombustion-powered cars could be modified or even pushed back beyond 2030.
