As expected, the demise of the major Australian car manufacturers will also affect the scores of smaller companies making parts for the auto industry. Late last year the Borg Warner factory (now known as DSI) in Albury Wodonga closed after over 40 years making gearboxes in Australia. The plant opened in 1971 and estimates are that over 4.5 million gearboxes were made. The company had a strong connection to Australian-made Fords, supplying 3-, 4- and 6-speed automatics and 3- and 4-speed manuals up until 2009. They also supplied gearboxes for Nissan, Toyota, GM-H and HSV, and to Chrysler Australia and then Mitsubishi. Borg Warner supplied gearboxes for the ill-fated Leyland P76 project.
