Notorious for his anarchic and perverse paintings, Filipino artist Manuel Ocampo has established himself as an iconoclastic provocateur and prankster in contemporary art over the past two decades. His cerebral yet visceral work merges aesthetics of kitsch and abstraction with sacrilegious iconography and political satire. Illustrated in this sketch for a painting are exaggerated portraits of Jesus Christ, spooked, irate or ghostly faces, and figures dressed in military regalia. In his critiques of Western colonialism, Southeast Asian politics and the art world, he reveals a persistent engagement with art history—for example, the heavily political show “Los Desastres de la Democracia” (2016–17), held at Quezon City’s Ateneo Art Gallery, sprung from a dialogue with Francisco Goya’s oil painting La Junta de la Compañia de Filipinas (1815).
