Roman legionary fort discovered in the Swiss Alps

A previously-unknown camp of the Roman army has been found high in the Oberhalbstein Alps, at an altitude of 2200 m in Southeastern Switzerland. Straddling a hilltop in the Colm la Runga, the military camp was fortified by concentric ditches and ramparts. Researchers believe the camp was established for its commanding views over the Landwasser, Albula, Domleschg, and Surses valleys, as well as the Lenzerheide Pass. The discovery was made as part of ongoing research into a Roman battlefield in Oberhalbstein, led by the University of Basel’s Vindonissa Professorship and the Archaeological Service of Graubünden. A volunteer detectorist, using high-resolution LiDAR terrain models, identified the site in autumn 2023.
