Urartian shields and helmet uncovered

Conservators have begun cleaning a trove of ancient artefacts discovered at Ayanis Castle in eastern Turkey. Among them are bronze shields and a bronze helmet. Excavations at Ayanis Castle, located in the Tusba district of Van province, have been ongoing for 37 years. The fortified hilltop site was originally constructed by Urartian King Rusa II (r. 680– 639 BC). It is considered one of the most impressive structures from the Iron Age, known for its intricate stone carvings, adobe walls, and ancient decorations. The recent finds include three bronze shields. They are round with a prominent, convex pointed dome and flat rim affixed around the circumference. There are two hand straps riveted on the inside.
