New Roman warship ram recovered

The bronze ram of a warship which fought in the Battle of the Aegates in 241 BC has been retrieved from the seafloor off the coast of Sicily. The ram (rostrum) was found at a depth of 80 m between the islands of Levanzo and Favignana. It was located, and then retrieved, using advanced technology from the scientific research vessel Hercules. Cast as a single piece, the rostrum was attached to the bow of the warship at water level to form an armoured beak. The thick ribs on its front and sides would thrust into the hull of an enemy vessel to puncture, disable, or sink it.
