New-Kingdom-era military base found in Egypt

A fine bronze sword from the time of King Ramesses II has been uncovered at an ancient military site at Tell AlAbqain in Beheira Governate, Egypt. Dating to the New Kingdom (ca. 1570–1069 BC), Al-Abqain was a strategic military hub, defending Egypt’s northwestern border against incursions from Libyan tribes and the Sea Peoples. The Egyptian archaeological mission, led by Dr Ahmed Saeed Al-Kharadly and affiliated with the Supreme Council of Antiquities, uncovered a series of mudbrick buildings at the site. The design of the military base included two symmetrical groups of structures divided by a main corridor. Preliminary study of the archaeological finds confirms the use of some buildings as warehouses to provision soldiers with food and supplies.
