“Half of ancient history” - that’s how Jona Lendering, founding editor of Ancient History and webmaster of Livius.org, qualified Rome to me some years ago. When it comes to the available sources — texts, inscriptions, archaeology — all put together, he’s probably right. Certainly we know lots more about the nuts and bolts of the Roman army than any other ancient armed force. The irony, of course, is that even for Rome, we’re still desperately short of data to resolve many burning questions. For us here, a large group of those questions concern the enemies of Rome. The list is long and distinguished, as they say, and for the large majority, we may have archaeological information and what the Romans tell us about these foes, with all possible consequences of their…
