Arian Christianity
Arius was a Christian priest from Egypt who died around AD 336. His beliefs quickly took hold in the highest circles of the empire. Arians believed that God the Father was more senior and important than God the Son. These ideas were considered heretical by all orthodox Christian sects, especially Nicene Christians, who accepted the essential equality of the holy trinity. This was the principal difference between Arian and orthodox Christianity, which led to great conflict in the church and mutual persecution. Constantine I (the Great) was baptised in 337 by an Arian bishop, Eusebius, and both the emperors Constantius (r. 337-361) and Valens (r. 364-378) were Arians, as were the various peoples of the Goths and Vandals.
