Crowning glory

The Romans had four crowns (coronae, sing. corona) which they regularly awarded for martial valour. The siege crown (corona obsidionalis, otherwise known as the corona graminea or ‘grass crown') was the highest honour and was presented to a man who had saved the legion or the army. The civic crown (corona civilis) was regarded as the second highest honour and was awarded to a man who had saved his fellow citizens' lives or stood their ground in battle. The mural crown (corona muralis) was given to the first soldier on the wall of an enemy city and who planted a standard there.
