The pharaoh was the most important person in Egypt, and, as such, was represented with various powerful symbols to show kingly and divine status. These symbols included several crowns, such as the white crown of Upper (southern) Egypt, the red crown of Lower (northern) Egypt, the blue war crown, and fertility crowns used in ritual worship. There was the false beard, a symbol of masculinity and worn by all pharaohs, including Hatshepsut and the female kings. These pharaohs did not actually grow facial hair, but wore a tightly bound goatee of goat's hair, fastened around their head with a gold chin strap.
