Born in the province of Asia, and living in Rome and Alexandria, Strabo travelled between each for his research, collecting information about places and people, while supplementing his firsthand experiences with extensive reading. The result is an encyclopaedic work that, along with descriptions of continents and seas, rivers and mountains, cities and sanctuaries, includes history and mythology – facts and ‘alternative facts’.
