AI and cameras will be used to chart hedgehog numbers

AG readers are being asked to join a three-year pilot project that aims to count hedgehog numbers across the UK. Populations of the ‘nation’s favourite mammal’ have sharply declined since 2000, leading to the launch of the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme, which will let experts, in time, give a national estimate of Britain’s hedgehog population. Led by The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), in partnership with Nottingham Trent and Durham universities, London HogWatch and MammalWeb, and largely funded by Natural England, the scheme will use AI, trail cameras and volunteers to give insights into the factors causing hedgehog numbers to plummet.
