1 Do you have peas on the plot? Support them with jute netting or pea sticks, for the plants’ tendrils to twine around. Check your variety’s final height - some reach 30cm, others way over 1.5m!
2 Have your sweet potatoes arrived? They may be rootless cuttings (slips), rooted cuttings or potted plants. Keep them somewhere frost-free until nights are consistently warm outside.
3 Don’t feel you’ve missed the boat if you haven’t kept up with veg sowing. Many garden centres and online suppliers now offer an excellent range of plug plants, so you can catch up.
4 Make the most of any sunny days with a breeze – this is ideal weather to thwart weed seedlings. Run a sharp hoe lightly over bare soil to decapitate and destroy these thuggish plants.
