The days of cheap electricity are over and, despite all the technical advances, increasing amounts of energy are being consumed as the number of new installations around the world grows. According to Bitkom [1], Germany alone has more than 3,000 data centers with greater than 40kW of IT connection capacity and at least 10 server racks, as well as around 47,000 smaller IT installations, and the trend is rising. Electricity demand for these data centers was an estimated 16 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2022 and is expected to increase by about five percent per year through 2030.
